British government's eye on IT raid on BBC office, said- we are looking at this closely: Purecreative
British government sources on Tuesday said the UK is "closely monitoring" income tax raid at BBC offices in India. The Income Tax Department on Tuesday carried out a operation at BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai as part of alleged tax evasion, officials said in New Delhi. BBC said that they are cooperating fully with the Indian Income Tax authorities and hoped the situation would be resolved at the earliest.
No official statement has come from the British government regarding this raid, but according to British sources, the government said that they are keeping an eye on the news of the raid conducted in BBC offices.
BBC assistant investigation
In Delhi, officials said BBC subsidiaries were being surveyed to examine issues related to international taxation and transfer pricing. He alleged that notices were given to BBC in the past but they ignored and did not comply and shifted a major part of its profits elsewhere.
We are cooperating fully: BBC
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) did not give much information about the income tax survey. During the survey, local BBC staff were reportedly prevented from entering the office premises and their mobile phones switched off. A BBC spokesman said in a statement: "We are cooperating fully." We hope that this situation will be resolved at the earliest.
People in Britain are in shock
The surprising move comes weeks after the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) aired a two-part documentary India: The Modi Question. Meanwhile, as news of the raid broke on Tuesday morning, people in Britain were shocked and the general consensus was that the crackdown was linked to a controversial BBC documentary broadcast last month.
Revenge of 'The Modi Question'
Mukulika Banerjee, principal author and academic at the London School of Economics, said, "Everyone is surprised and no one can be fooled and as stated, this tax raid is a revenge for the recent BBC documentary 'The Modi Question'. He added that the BBC is an independent public broadcaster, so if it makes a documentary, it is not acting at the behest of the British government. In fact, BBC journalists regularly question the British Prime Minister and all elected officials, holding them accountable for their actions.
Raid support by many
Meanwhile, other organizations such as the Global Hindu Federation supported the raid. Last month, NRIs protested outside BBC offices in various UK cities against the documentary. The British government, reacting to the demonstrations, stressed in the House of Commons (Parliament) that the BBC is an independent media organization and reiterated the government's commitment to enhance its ties with India.
