Sweet Girl review :Jason Momoa’s Netflix Action Thriller

Taking a straight thriller set-up and injecting it with warnings about the evils of Big Pharma is nothing new. Elements of the genre sweeten the bitter pill of the controversy against medical business practices that destroy lives but where, say, The Fugitive perfectly balanced its pulse-pounding set-pieces with corporate conspiracy revelations, Netflix's Sweet Girl feels like an off-brand substitute that doesn't pass as effectively. . Here, the drug is Spero, a cancer drug nearing approval that could save patient Amanda's (Adria Arjona) life thanks to some insidious backroom dealings before it's pulled from the market. In the wake of her subsequent death, husband Ray (Jason Momoa) and daughter Rachel (Isabella Merced) power through their grief at the gym and try to get to the heart of why the medicine was never made available. The revelations behind the corruption that puts them on the run from hit men, wealthy corporations and the law. Jason Momoa is the perfect kind of action star for an avenging baller, but Sweet Girl's action sequences make the most of her physicality laying smackdown against goons with believable ease and landing some heavy blows herself .The visuals lack spark or originality. A public transport beatdown is less satisfying - and less fun - than a similar sequence in this year's Nobody. As a leading man, Momoa has reached the stage in his career where he can basically play himself .His trademark earthy rock-god aesthetic remains here, and if he's been bone-dry the whole time, If not, he could have walked straight off the Aquaman set. He graces the screen well, though, with moments of emotional resonance. When Amanda passes away, he's heartbroken. In a serious step up from 2019's Dora And The Lost City Of Gold, Isabella Merced also remains an engaging co-lead to watch, who gets her fair share of action here.
